The media is no longer doing its job so it is time for you, me, all of us to step and be the media we all want and deserve. Maybe there was a time we could count on the “media” to tell us the truth and to share the stories that matter most but that time has passed.

Corporate media has devolved into a shell game with fear, controversy, and lies as the shells and your attention as the pea. The media model is broken. When the media is incented (that means gets paid more) by more clicks, views, and downloads it becomes a race to the bottom in order to get your attention by any means necessary.

There is something we all can do to put a stop to this madness. We can become citizen journalists. We all have an audience these days — it might be on Facebook, Instagram. TikTok, LinkedIn. You might have a radio show, blog, podcast, or YouTube channel. It doesn’t matter how large or small your audience is — you have an audience that matters to you. And you have some influence with those people. Your stories matter to them. So start sharing the stories that matter to you.

Here is the dirty little secret about the media. No one has to “certify” you as a member of the media. You don’t need a degree in “media” in order to share stories and tell your truth.

It is all of our responsibility to share the stories around us. I’m not saying you have to become an investigative reporter. But you can report on what restaurant is worth going to. What mechanic is trustworthy. Which business owner is stepping up and really cares. Instead of focusing on who disappointed you — tell us about who rose up and over-delivered. Who are the good corporate citizens that we should support? Your community is counting on you to tell them your truth. We have to do something in order for the media to regain the trust and respect it used to have. A thriving America needs the media to do its job. That job has not changed. We need the media to tell us the truth. We need more facts and less opinion.

So instead of waiting for these corporate media dinosaurs to get their act together and abandon their failing business models, we have to take action. We have to become the change that we want in the media. Start small. But please start telling the stories around you.
